Harold S. Worcester papers, 1924-1943, (bulk 1924-1930)

The collection contains photographs of the Smuggler Mine, the Tomboy Mine, and of surrounding areas of San Miguel County, Colorado. Also included is a small amount of correspondence between Worcester and Robert Livermore, formerly manager of the Smuggler, and W. Spencer Hutchinson, Livermore's partner in the firm of North American Mines, Inc. Finally, there is a reprint of an article by Worcester, "The Closing Days of the Smuggler Union," with a letter of comment on the article from Robert Livermore, and a stock certificate of the Pandora Development Company.

Harold S. Worcester was a mining engineer. He was born in Arvada, Colorado, in 1891 and took a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1916. He was superintendent of the Smuggler Union Mine near Telluride, Colorado, from 1927 to 1929, when the mine closed. He then became general superintendent of the Rico Argentine Mining Company of Rico, Colorado. He returned to the Smuggler when the mine reopened in 1940, remaining until about 1949. Robert Livermore (1876-1959) was a mining engineer and executive. He was educated at Harvard (1900) and MIT (1903). He engaged in mining exploration throughout the western United States, Canada, and Mexico. He was vice-president, and later president, of the Smuggler Union Mining Company, which operated the Smuggler Union Mine near Telluride, Colorado, until its closure in 1928.
